Malvern Hill - Seven Days Battles:: Civil War

The sixth and final of the Seven Days’ Battles and the first in which the Union Army occupied favorable ground. The major battles of the Seven Days had been mostly inconclusive, but Union General McClellan was unnerved by Confederate General Lee's aggressive assaults and remained convinced that he was seriously outnumbered, although in fact the two armies were roughly equal. Malvern Hill offered McClellan good observation and artillery positions with the slopes cleared of timber, providing great visibility, and could be swept by deadly fire from the 250 guns. Beyond this space, the terrain was swampy and thickly wooded.

From here, Gen. Robert E. Lee launched a series of assaults on the nearly impregnable Union position on Malvern Hill. The Confederates could suffer unthinkable casualties without gaining an inch of ground, or their unrelenting attacks could be the final straw for McClellan, driving him from the Peninsula and saving Richmond.

The Confederate General DH Hill said of Malvern Hill: "It was not war...it was murder."
